New Jersey

New Jersey was founded in 1664 by Lord Berkey and Sir George Carteret. Target Residents-Residency Requirements: Slave importers/farmers/any religion especially Quakers. The only reason New Jersey was ever a colony was because the founder of New York thought New York was too big, so he gave some of his land to two men. Those men were Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.  The colony gained most of their income from farming and exporting grain. They also grew rice, tobacco, and indigo. The geography of New Jersey was very rocky, but with very fertile soil. The colony welcomed all religions, but was mostly Quaker and Presbyterian.  It had a proprietary government, which means that one or more proprietors were given full governing power by the king. One of the important residents living in New Jersey was The Duke of York. If the residents import African slaves, they get 60 acres of land per slave. The colony really encouraged slaves. Since the colony was founded because New York was too big, the people there were just average farmers. A lot of farmers moved there because of all the fertile soil on the large flat lands there. Those farmers then exported their products making profitsSince the predominant religion there is Quaker and Presbytarian one who wants to move there would have to be either Quaker or Presbyterian or be very accepting of those religions because there is a very heavy presence there.
