Maryland

Maryland was founded in 1632 by Sir George Calvert. It was founded as a safe haven for Catholics. It had an assembly, so it was a representative government. The main religion was Catholicism, but Protestants were also welcomed. The main exports were tobacco and a lot of people earned their money by fishing. An important document of Maryland is the Act of Toleration in 1649. Some important people who came from Maryland were the Brent sisters. They became land owners with male servants and helped prevent a rebellion by the governors troops. Maryland had a multitude of geographical features. It was by the sea so that provided some trade. They also had lots of open land where they grew the tobacco. As long as you didn't persecute anyone's religion and you were tolerant, you were welcome in Maryland. Because it was founded as a safe haven for Catholics, droves of Catholics settled there and sonce they were very tolerant of all religions, people from any religion were welcomed there as well. Because it was a representative government, people had a say in how the colony was run. Because it was by the sea, they were traders and fishers but since they had large expanses of land they also exported large amounts of tobacco.
