Delaware

Delaware was part of the Pennsylvania colony, but they didn't want to travel, leading to the new colony. Delaware was founded in 1638 by Peter Minuit, but Henry Hudson, was originally the first to explore the land. Delaware was governed by Pennsylvania until the Revolutionary War. Their government was democratic and often held town meetings. The land was named as New Sweden when the Dutch had first discovered it, but Thomas West Baron De La Warr renamed New Sweden to Delaware. This colony was the first of the original colonies to sign the Constitution. Delaware had extremely fertile soil, giving the colonists an opportunity to make profits of the large plantations that they owned. Many colonists, from rich settlers to indentured servants, came to Delaware because of the cash crops and profits that they made off of it. Because of this, Delaware and the other middle colonies were known as the bread basket colonies for the large amounts of grains they grew and imported. Two-thirds of the coast of Delaware was on water. The largest river was the Christiana, named after the Queen of Sweden. The colony had a mixture of religions practiced due to religious freedom and tolerance.Because of this, the colony had highly diversified people and religion. The large plantations owned on the large plains of fertile soil made loads of money.Because the government was democratic, it gave the people a voice in government and it made sure that the government wasn't to powerful. Since there were also town meetings, the people also knew what was going on and so they were well informed and not easily manipulated. Because the colony was founded so that people didn't have to travel a lot, then these people would be very practical. These people would know the good people and the bad, so that no matter what kind of person you were if they thought that you weren't going to be good for the colony you wouldn't be welcomed.
